Box Office: 'Up' beats 'The Hangover' by $1M

Weekend of June 5 – 7, 2009

Pixar’s “Up” topped the North American box office for a second consecutive weekend with $44.2 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Playing at 3,818 locations, the Pete Docter-directed animated adventure brought its domestic gross to $137.3 million after a strong two-week run. The plot follows a 78-year-old widower who takes his entire house on a trip to South America.

Debuting in second place with $43.2 million from 3,521 locations was Todd Philiips’ latest comedy “The Hangover.” The R-rated film stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helm and Zach Galifianakis as three guys who lose their best friend on a night out in Vegas.

Following at a distant No. 3 was Brad Silberling’s adventure comedy “Land of the Lost,” which collected only $19.5 million from 3,521 locations. Will Ferrell stars as an egocentric scientist who travels to a parallel dimension inhabited by hostile creatures.

At No. 4, Shawn Levy’s Ben Stiller vehicle “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” picked up another $14.6 million, lifting its total haul to $127.3 million after three weeks in release.

Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” scored $8.4 million in fifth place, reaching a cumulative gross of $222.8 million after an impressive five-week run. Following at No. 6 with $8.1 million was “Terminator Salvation,” which brought its cume to $105.4 million.

Sam Raimi’s latest horror flick “Drag Me to Hell” slipped to No. 7 this weekend, taking home $7.3 million for a total gross of $28.5 million. Alison Lohman stars as an eager loan officer cursed by a creepy old lady.

At the bottom of the top 10, Ron Howard’s “Angels & Demons” pulled in $6.5 million in eighth place, lifting its domestic gross to $116.1 million. Donald Petrie’s new entry “My Life in Ruins” debuted at No. 9 with a three-day gross of only $3.2 million.

Finally, “Dance Flick” dropped to No. 10 with a weekend gross of $2 million and a total haul of $22.6 million after three weeks in release.
