This week's new movie releases - July 1, 2009

This week, we're looking at two wide releases: Michael Mann's crime drama "Public Enemies" with Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard; and Carlos Saldanha and Mike Thurmeier's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" with the voices of John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah and Denis Leary:

PUBLIC ENEMIES

Synopsis: The film follows the true story of legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger, the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoovers fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis, and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

First thoughts: Michael Mann is back in action, and I'm very eager to see what "Public Enemies" is all about. Trailers and clips for the film have already won me over, and the cast as well as the flick's production values and potential entertainment factor certainly look promising. Look for our review early Wednesday, the film's opening day.

ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS

Synopsis: Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, and Scrat encounter a dinosaur population that survived extinction in its tropical paradise, which existed below the thick layers... until now. Meanwhile, Crash and Eddie are up to their usual crazy selves. Manny and Ellie have since become an item are going to have their first baby, and Manny wants everything to be perfect when his baby arrives. Diego is tired of being treated like a "House-cat" and ponders the notion that he's being too laid back. Sid starts to wish for a family of his own, and so steals some dinosaur eggs which leads his herd to go and to try to rescue him while dodging dinosaurs and facing danger left and right.

First thoughts: While I mildly enjoyed the first "Ice Age," I admit I really didn't enjoy the sequel as much. "Dawn of the Dinosaurs" is not a movie I am overly excited about, and I can only hope they injected their characters and story with something we haven't seen yet. I'll be looking for entertainment more than anything else in this one. The previous installment seriously bored me to death.
