'My Sister's Keeper' web reviews

Cameron Diaz, Jason Patric, Alec Baldwin, Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva star in Nick Cassavetes' latest drama "My Sister's Keeper," based on the popular novel by Jodi Picoult. Here's what some of the Web's critics have to say about the flick:
• CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "It feels unbelievably cynical to start giggling during a movie about a girl with cancer, but My Sister's Keeper is just as cynical, calibrating its every move to get us to cry so hard we recommend the movie to our friends."
• Peter Martin at Cinematical: "It's a disappointing step back for Cassavetes after the vim and vitality that infused his most recent effort, 'Alpha Dog.'"
• Kevin Carr at FilmSchoolRejects: "However, the emotional jabs just seemed a bit too calculated and deliberate to fool me."
• Brian Orndorf at BrianOrndorf.com: "It’s a tear-jerking Terminator, an unstoppable force that beats the screen with tragedies of all shapes and sizes, looking to wear down the viewer until they’re a puddle of tears and snotty tissue."
• Eric Sloss at MovieJungle: "'My Sister’s Keeper' has some strong moments, but drowns in the excesses of the genre."

In comparison to the novel, the adapted film of "My Sister's Keeper" is nothing. Characters and subplots are removed while some characters don't even appear as the same person. What was most disappointing, however, was the end's change. Alone, the film version of "My Sister's Keeper" touched the hearts of audiences everywhere, but when matched up against the best-selling novel, the movie appears as a complete cop-out.
Best movie ever you cry throughout it was just amazing
Marie, you are right on!. I loved the novel and was so disappointed to see the ending changed and both the characters of Jesse and Carlton void of their depth. Where was all the symbolism of the "putting out of fires" and "setting of fires" that made the novel a well-crafted story? Why did the movie have to put all its energy into Katie and leave Anna's medical issues in the background? eWhile the movie was well-acted, the director and screen writer dropped the ball in their focus. They could have left the audience with some thought provoking questions, but instead settled for tear-jerking drama and superficial emotions. I have resolved NOT to read books prior to seeing the movie version in the future.
