This week's new movie releases - June 19, 2009

This week, we're only looking at two wide releases: Harold Ramis' comedy "Year One" with Jack Black and Michael Cera; and Anne Fletcher's "The Proposal" with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds:

Sandra Bullock in The Proposal

THE PROPOSAL

Synopsis: Sandra Bullock is a Canadian immigrant who is a demanding and difficult boss. Upon discovering she's about to be deported, she rushes into a marriage of convenience with her young assistant (Ryan Reynolds) to prevent the catastrophe.

First thoughts: Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds both have the ability to deliver solid performances, and I sincerely hope "The Proposal" gave them decent material to work with. To be honest with you, I'm not quite sure what to think about this one. Its trailer didn't exactly win me over, but it looks like the two leads have what it takes to share an enjoyable onscreen chemistry.

Year One with Jack Black and Michael Cera

YEAR ONE

Synopsis: When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Jack Black and Michael Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.

First thoughts: So far, I haven't laughed once during the trailer or TV spots for "Year One." The basic story does sound funny, but I'm not sure this one will deliver as many laughs as I would want it to. Something about it just doesn't feel right. Cera looks like he's playing the exact same guy he played in all his previous films, and Black seems to be busy doing plenty of improvs. But who knows... maybe I'm wrong. Look for our review of "Year One" early on opening day.
