This week's new movie releases - May 8, 2009

This week, we're looking at two wide releases: J.J. Abrams' anticipated "Star Trek" reboot with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Bruce Greenwood, Eric Bana, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg and John Cho; and Benny Boom's comedy "Next Day Air" with Donald Faison, Mike Epps and Mos Def:

Star Trek

STAR TREK

Synopsis: The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James Kirk, is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock, was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before.

First thoughts: I've never been a big "Star Trek" fan, and to be honest, I haven't seen many "Star Trek" films, but the look of Abrams' reboot caught my attention. Plus, I've pretty much only heard positive things from folks who've already seen it. Unfortunately, I won't be able to see it next week because I'll be moving cross-country, but I will catch it the week after with pretty high expectations.

Next Day Air

NEXT DAY AIR

Synopsis: Life isn't going smoothly for Leo Jackson. He still lives at home, he just broke up with his girlfriend and he's had so many complaints about his sloppy work habits that his own mother is threatening to fire him. But Leo isn't one to let a few bad breaks ruins his day—as long as he's got plenty of weed to take his mind off his troubles. But when the whacked-out courier accidentally delivers a box containing 10 kilos of high quality cocaine to the wrong apartment, it sets in motion a hilarious and harrowing chain of events that could cost him his life.

First thoughts: This just looks like the kind of summer comedy I'm looking for right now: action-packed, brainless and yet quite funny. The trailer promises a lot of fun and some visually interesting shoot-outs, and I only hope "Next Day Air" really delivers.
