First stills for Shyamalan's 'Airbender' hit

After the gigantic mess that was "The Happening," M. Night Shyamalan takes a break from mysterious horror and dives into the world of adapting animated television series. His next project is "The Last Airbender," which is based on Nickelodeon's "Avatar: The Last Airbender," and USA Today has the first two stills from the flick, which is set to open July 2, 2010. Check them out below and read more about the film here.

The first photo below shows Noah Ringer as lead character Aang, a young boy who heads out to stop the ruthless Firebenders from controlling the great nations. Dev Patel (in the second still) stars as the evil Prince Zuko. Jackson Rathbone, Nicola Peltz, Shaun Toub, Jessica Andres and Aasif Mandvi co-star.

For one thing, Aang's arrow tattos are BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not black ro whatever color that is. And no disrespect to the actor playing Aang but Aang is Asian not white. They are not staying true to the cartoon that everyone loved. If they thing changing it is going to make people like it then their wrong! People loved the show that way it was with Asian poeple as the characters. Oh and don't get me started on the other characters. Zuko is not dark skinned. He's pale. And Katara is not pale, she's dark skinned. They got actors mixed up! Watever, I don't think it's going to make. They changed it from what the fans know it as. PLUS, Zuko has a scar on his face, the picture doesn't even show it. Seriously?

They got wrong actors for the wrong parts! I mean it would okay to use unknown Asian characters to star in the movie! And don't think I'm the only one complaining. Others are too! Heck even started a petition called, Aang's Not White. It's not supposed to be racist or anything but they're making a movie out of an Asian themed cartoon. We just think that the movie should enforce that. I don't think the fans of the cartoon are going to be happy with the movie. That's just what I think. You don't agree, oh well.

Cool Your jets. I love the show to but everybody knows that we can't have everything. Directors often have to cast whoever they can get that has skill. Would you rather it be an unskilled actor that got the part because he's the look alike or because he is a good actor. Plus, in the real movie they get to add more detail, so the arrow isn't exactly the same. I like it and i think it will look great on the big screen.

I wanted my Zuko to be sexier like in the show! Booooo!

I heavily doubt any of the designs you see here on the stills are final and might be subject to change. Personally, I would really like if they change the color of Aang's arrow tattoo, and most of the costumes, since they do look cheaply made. But, the actors are final , people, so suck it up. I don't agree with Shymalan's choices, but i will definately see the movie just for his representaton of the series and how much of the advice he took from Mike and Byran. Who know's? It just may be kick ass... but that's just my optimism kicking in.

What you've got to keep in mind is that, this isn't a cartoon! This is M. Night Shyamalan adaption, and so far is obviously amazing. Certain things have been changed for realism; such as his tattoo... which is freaking amazing.

I'm not as happy with Zuko; but I'm no longer fearing a huge crash like Dragon Ball was. Definatly looking out for this now.

They got it correct with Aang. He looks just like him. And I don't think asians would fit here. Nothing against them... I am asian myself. But Zuko looks a bit... well not like Zuko. I hope they'll choose the right persons for Toph and Azula. These are characters where I worry the most.

I'm sick to death of people whining that things aren't 'right'. There is no right or wrong in this, ATLA was a cartoon, an -American- cartoon at that. It was based on Asian life and such, sure, but I'm certain if it were all Asian-made and such Avatar wouldn't have it's goofy people like Sokka rocking up the picture. Aang -is- white. His skin colour clearly shows this in the series, duh. I'm sure if we were going for right-up cultural shit we'd be going on to how the artists didn't draw their eyes Asian-like, right...?

Besides all of that, I originally felt that Sokka and Zuko's actors should have switched acting places, Dev being able to wear blue contacts or something, but whatever. That's probably the only problem I have with it, but I won't complain. I'll go and see the movie either way and I'm sure Shyamalan will make a wonderful adaptation of the series.

On another note, I am REALLY fond of how they've done the arrow on Aang's head. Creative and more believable than a simple blocked neon arrow slapped on the poor boys head. I'd love to have something like that, it's awesome D:

WTF?!

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGuitta

ok.. I actually like the choice for Aang. he looks like the character and i agree that the tatoo looks kick ass. Zuko... could have chosen someone better... The fire nation is supposed to be light to slightly tanned.. so I guess Dev is good. His scar, is toned down, probably so it doesn't scare little kids. I have to say, Azula and Toph for the next movie, if there is one.. are the ones to watch out for.. I just kinda wish that the show stayed the show.. and not turned into a movie...

Damn it man! Why can't they like freaking use Asian THIS time? Look the shit Dragonball came up....KAMEI HA MEI HA!? The way that asshole said insults EVERY Dragonball fan there is! Seriously, they're gonna screw this movie up....LOOK AT AANG! He looks like a freaking 5 month old white kid wanting mama's milk! AND ZUKO!! Oh my gosh! He is Chinese or something! C'mon, no INDIAN! There's no India in Avatar....THERE's NO SLUMDOG in any nation in Avatar..

And I thought M. Might Shymalan is a nice director...and to even think he LIKES this show. He is gonna screw this the way they screwed Dragonball....

Dude... where the hell is aangs' blue arrow!!!!!! Of all things... that should be the number one priority.... I mean how hard is it to paint a blue arrow on a kid's head!!!!
and Zuko....hes hot...but where's his scar.... I hope this movie comes out epic or it sucks already. I mean I am a serious avatar fan....I'm just happy Jackson is playing Sokka...(So sexy!!!!!)

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterUPSET FAN!!!!

Aww man, wha oh WHY does Aang look like a baby?? A FREAKING BABY!! He's 11 years old, dammit! Make him look like that! Older, even!! And really, how hard is it to paint a blue arrow on someone's head? I can do it by myself! And Zuko... WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?!?!?!?! I wanna my Zuko to be hot, like in the cartoon!! Let's just hope they make Sokka look good...

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNellie

All I can say now is that they've started filming and we will just have to enjoy what comes out after all we rant on about the asian thing but the cartoon was made by two white people ... and if thats acceptable then I suppose we can live with the cast even if they are not how we saw them to be ...*sighs* ... I'm looking forward to it :D (mostly the special effects though (^^))

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKai

WHy are Ang and Zuko white? Everyone in Avatar is ASIAN, don't believe me, just listen to their names. Every country in Avatar is based of a real asian country. Also Ang is the age range of 10-12 this kid look like he's 9. I think anime and things of anime nature should just be left alone, except for certain exception like Death Note.

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHyde

This is worse than the Sailor Moon and DBZ live actions *face palm*

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSora

Really they couldn't come up with better actors or costume designers? I find that hard to believe. I honestly don't care how "hot" the person is, as long as they look like the damn character they are supposed to play. I'm not paying to watch this abomination and I don't believe anyone I know will either.

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTicked

You guys haven't even seen the movie yet and you are complaning about the movie!
Give these people a chance!

You can't just complain about small shit like "Oh no the arrow isn't blue!", "Zuko doesn't look hot enough"... shut your bread whole until you have seen the movie!

I like who they chose for Aang. Zuko isn't the best, but he still looks cool. I like Aang's arrow, it is totally better than the one in the show. Plus, the characters aren't all Asian you doosh bags. The story is based on alot of Chinese stuff as the creators have said, but the whole world ain't Asian so they characters are different.

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMe

is it so difficult to stick to similar outfits?? wth?
It's like, everything is right there in front of his face already done, colored, designed, etc, and yet he still manages to make everything look crappy?
And the backgrounds look so bad in those pictures.
So fake!
Lameness!
And Zuko!! *cries*
The horror...

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterA

DUDE WHY IS AANG WHITE!!
no disrespect but we all know what they are all supposed to look like....
I mean he's cute and all, but picture the girl playing Katara kissing that...
he' like 5!!!!!
Any way i don't mind Dev Patel plying zuko though Zuko is my favorite character... I just hope that he doesn't mess it up... but NO PRESSURE!!!
anyway I'm pretty pissed about the racial differences from the show.... we can have and asian here and there. It's like casting azula as a black girl(im black btw).... u just can't do that! But Toph and Azula better be cated right if they make another movie. I have to say they are some of the deepest character (like UNCLE!!!) and they have to be casted right
but think about this...
would you rather have a differect color kid play the part correctly, than the asian (that is perfered) do a horrible job????
just sayin...
oh but I am happy about Jackson playing Sokka... I happen to be a huge Jasper fan... and a sokka.. and Jackson is sooooooo hot!!!!! (OMIGOD!!!!)

People, really? Shut up! For starters Aang is blatantly white; this can be furthered by the fact that Anime's and psuedo-anime's (Avatar) never have Asian people. The characters have different skin tones and ethnicities but they usually have large Anime, not narrow and stereotypically Asian, eyes. Go look at Aang he is pale and everyone knows that if they had an Asian kid everyone would complain about him not looking like Aang; you guys are so stupid. I will say that I agree that Deva and Jackson should have switched roles, but who cares?! They are going to make a great movie because on like Dragonball they are not starting from random elements in the plot; they are taking the Book 1 story and making it a movie. There are things that you can't always have perfectly in movies, and that's because no one looks identical to Aang, but Noah Rider is pretty damn close. It's also very hard to include every single aspect of a person's physical characteristics and as long as the don't mess up the plot, make a bad movie, have bad special effects, or entirely change the characters' personalities this will be a great movie. Those errors would be large and grave; I doubt that Nick or the creators of Avatar would let those things happen.

P.S.
Shut up.

So Asians can't have a variety of looks? There aren't any Asians with big round eyes and there is no such thing as Caucasians with narrow eyes? Gotta love generalizing. Dev and Jackson shouldn't switch roles, throw Jackson out he shouldn't have been cast in the movie in the first place. They could have tried to find minority actors for roles, but they didn't want to and that's why there are people upset with it. If they aren't going to let Asians play themselves or play characters inspired by Asians, what else is left to play since they aren't going to change races to make diversity in those Eurocentric films.

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTicked

What is up with the subtext here? All the Fire Nation actors are Indian or Middle Eastern, and all the Water and Air Nation are white! Avatar isn't supposed to be racist! Boo to that!

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCarolina

I would agree that Jackson and Dev should've changed roles, but i kinda like the kick-ass stance Dev has in the pic. Kinda has a im-gonna-kill expresion too. I was impressed with the pic and the clothes are cool, but i see no scar and no knot at the top of his head... Well, I trust Shyamalan cause i think he could pull it off. Even if The Happening sucked, Signs and Lady in the Water were really good. (Especially Signs).
IM ROOTING FOR YA SHYAMALAN!!!!!

About the Aang pic. I like it but two things are bothering me and one of them is NOT THE ARROW. One, i think the kid's a good representation of Aang cause he's kinda goofy-looking and has big ears, but the things is: Aang only looks goofy when he's laughing, , normal or whatever. But when he's serious all the goofyness disappears and this kid is serious and i just wanna laugh. Number Two, Aang is a light, small and fit 10-12 year old kid. This Noah dude doesn't look fit enough to be in a Martial Arts Movie and i can't imagine him doing Airbending. In the picture his stance is good, but there's something that doesn't click. Anyway, i'm rooting for this kid too and all the other actors!
DON'T LET ME DOWN LIKE DRAGONBALL DID AND SHOW PEOPLE THAT ANIME CAN BECOME KICK-ASS MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

M.NIGHT SHYAMALAN WE'RE COUNTING ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

one thing you should all know is that the writers for the tv series is working closely with this. they are also helping with the writing for the story so imo should be awesome. DB evo was gay ads hell nothing EVER can suck more than that

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermanny

wow honestly I like the actor who is playing aang. they got his face shape right. though the tatto needs to be a bit more pronounce. Im just surprised that so many people are getting upset over something they HAVENT EVEN SEEN YET.

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered Commenternobody

PLEASE!! don't make a dragonball look-a-like flop!!! Just keep to the story, let the actors play like the real characters in the cartoon/anime!. Just the way it looks now, it will be a big flop. Make it real, not plastic.

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterStofFeRr

really people ur getting pissed at the movie. I like it that tatoo would be kick-ass. If it was in blue it would be better but no complaints here. and the zuko and sokka actors should switch but no tv show-made movie fololows exactly like the show. I am glad that they are going to release them in books. i look forward to seeing the special effects for the book 1 finally fish avtar water creaturer thing.plus the staff aang has in that shot is so perect. i ran a clarity program on it and it looks totaly perfect compared to the show. I will admit that the clothes could be better but it's not as important as the action and story line. the actor that plays suki is hot and a perfect representation of the character. I hope that the avatar people work to come up with a fourth book as a prologue to the water, earth, and fire books. it would show some of aang when learning to airbend and getting prepared to be avatar. I also am antisipating the special effects on Avatar State and any bending. I actually liked the happening because it was pretty interesting. Anyway, My point is SHUT THE FUCK UP ALL U WHINERS. I believe in shyamilan and his coworkers on making this movie awesome. I will see all movies about it when they come out. they will rock and people will enjoy it.

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPancakeBuddy

Boo. Thats all I can say. As if making a movie out of a perfectly ruined cartoon series wasn't enough. They decided to make it even worse by having whites and indians play the most obvious asian characters.

And please don't even start the whole aang is white business. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Its stupid to the point I can't even attempt a laugh.

And about asians and their eye shapes... Not all of them have small eyes. It's like saying all white people have a birds nose, all blondes are idiots, black people are all gangsters from the hood. Don't stereotype brainless fools, please.

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlalalol

"For starters Aang is blatantly white; this can be furthered by the fact that Anime's and psuedo-anime's (Avatar) never have Asian people.

actually, in anime, it is assumed that all characters are Japanese, unless their race is specifically distinguished or pointed out, like Lenalee in D.Gray-Man.

May 28, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteranon#500

the first comment about this,,,whoever you are, you're really stupid, it doesn't show the scar because you can't evene see half of his face!!!! It's like the Dark Knight, the trailer the whole time, you didn't see the scar, but you knew it was two-face. Another thing...Aang is the whitest kid I've ever seen in the cartoon, he's not asian whatsoever, but whatever, a whole lot of you are either little kids or adults whom just complain, rememeber the Dark Knight? Nobody thought that Heath ledger was going to be great, well guess what...he's the best!!!! So don't go judgeing of what you don't even know because you haven't even seen a trailer for one thing, calm down you little whimps!!! M. Night Shyamalan's a phenomenal filmmaker and since he's working with the creators themselves, I doubt that anything will go wrong.

May 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNNN

Here's something, since when could asians even act? Seriously, All that I've seen were Jackie Chan and Jet Lee, both excellent martial arts people, but horrible actors. Asians aren't even that emotional...at all...The only asian actress that's good is the girl in LOST! (They're not much to look at either)

May 31, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterthekidnextdoor

Seriously? Bad choice for actors. I agree when they say that the actors should be asians. and atleast have the actors look like the characters! Aang is a cross between white and asian...if tht makes sense.. (thekidnextdoor) says asian actors cant act. this isnt all the way true. and even if it is it'd be better if they were asian. zuko's scar is no where to be found. I see this becoming like dragonball z. but i'll just wait to see what they will come up with. maybe it'll be good but i highly doubt it. avatar was the best thing nickelodeon could do..

May 31, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterinubaka

This obviously sucks. It may be an adaptation but that is what all movies are. Of books or shows, they are adaptations and so far they are either okay or NOTHING like the original. I can tell just by looking at this that it is going to FAIL EPICALLY! Zuko was a lot more muscular than that AND he was light skinned and pale. And so what if it is an adaptation? There are a lot of adaptations where they make it very true to the original. This, however is not even remotely close to the original. I wonder if they are even going to keep the original storyline. So far I have been very disappointed. And btw, Zuko didn't have so much hair until AFTER he went in hiding and then returned home. I'm sorry, but I think I could have found better actors for the parts than what this person did. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Shyamilan in the first place. His "horror" movies are not even horror, they are "creep the person out a little and then make them joke about it later" movies. Movies that can be called horror are movies like The Ring, The Grudge and The Unborn. This is going to be a disaster, just like the Dragon Ball movie was. But this is Hollywood. They don't like casting Asians in their movies unless they are beautiful Asian girls that make guys pitch tents in the theatres. =_= Hollywood is proving to be quite stupid and ethnocentric indeed.

June 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDaHee Kim

And BTW kidnextdoor, do you even know how racist you sounded saying Asians can't act? Have you ever even seen Death Note the Movie? At least when Asians do a real life movie based on a cartoon, the characters at least LOOK the part as they do in the anime. And yes, Asians CAN act. Lucy Liu is Asian, or did you forget about her? She is quite famous, but like I stated before: Hollywood only likes Asian women. You need to watch some more Asian Dramas and movies to understand that Asians CAN act and do it very well. Just that Hollywood hasnt looked hard enough for them and how hard is it for Hollywood to ask Asia to borrow some of their movie stars for the movie? I wouldn't mind the accents, I think it would be awesome. But seriously, you need to think and do a little more research before you let your fingers smash against your keyboard.

June 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDaHee Kim

IF YOU B*****S DONT LIKE IT DEAL WITH IT gggggggggggggggggooooooooooooooDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. I MEAN ITS RACIEST TO LSAY THAT THEY ARE ALL ASAIN BECAUSE THE ACTOR WHO VOICES ZUKO IS LATINO SO FOR HIM TO BE DARK SKINNED GOD TRY CASTING CHARECTERS YOURSELF THAT ARE WILLING TO DO NOW SHUT UP AND THINK BOUT IT

June 3, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermickey

Deal with it? Oh we're dealing with it alright by making sure everyone knows the kind of crap they pulled with this film. We're sick of it and it's time for it end.

June 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTicked

ugh! this is so wrong!! what the hell is wrong with the people making this movie? why doesn't nickelodeon complain? It's going to be worse than Dragon Ball evolution and that made one whant to kill oneself. Yhis sucks, spits, and sucks again!!!

June 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAndie

No, no this will not make. The actor of Aang, maybe but Zuko, NO! this is an insult to the film industry and Shyamalan is disgracing directors even more! He should have stuck to horror films, not to mention that the original creators have absolutely no position in this film.

This is how they ruined Dragon ball.. I watched the cartoon only 4 times, and even I saw that the movie was not even close to the original cartoon, they need to hire a real professional to direct, produce and write this film. The clothes are cheep and the backgrounds horrible.

I am positive that the music will be nothing as the series; what they needed to do was to hire the original music artist from the series and adapt his new and old creations to a better director of music (such as an orchestra)

This looks like a cheep Kung-fu film from the 1980's, I strongly disagree with Shyamalans ideas. The only characters that look remotely like the cartoon was Admiral Zhoa, Uncle Iroh and Aang and still they disappointed me. It was a bad idea to have MTV have a part in this.

The director should have been true to everything, the costumes are bad and disgusting.

ALL SHYAMALAN IS TRYING TO DO IS MAKE ANOTHER HORRIBLE KUNG FU HIT

well guess what, it may be a hit with all the avatar fans going to see it, but from negative review and complaints, I highly doubt that there will be a sequel.

Thanks for reading

For 1 DON'T HACK DOWN A MOVIE YOU HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN YET. You can't tell how a movie is going to be with just pictures. HELLLOOOOOO. You all know that you're talking crap now but when it comes out you will be there to watch it. If you don't like the actors then you should have tried out for the part yourself. SO GET OVER IT. Stop talking crap about the director he will probably do a better job then you.

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterme

Dev can go eat a d***. so can m. night; he prolly hooked dev up with this role. what a doucher. they should've kept dante basco as zuko. i went to go see transformers 2 and i was really pumped for this movie until i found out the dev patel a****** fu*** ruined the whole damm movie for me. shyamalan needs to b hung by his balls and beaten over the head with bats. screw him; screw the movie. they should've gotten the same ppl who made crouching tiger hidden dragon cast and direct this film; and also fuck nickelodeon for letting this happen u push over bastards. i outta kik dev right in the nose

June 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDev-gina

Mickey, sweetheart, Dante Basco, the voice actor for Zuko, is Filipino. He IS Asian.

Now, I won't get into the whole race-issue, because I'm tired of saying what's already been said. At this point, I don't care which actor is which race, but I'd like the actors to have at least a LITTLE bit semblance to the characters they're playing.

OF COURSE, with Sokka, they had to pick a guy who is currently playing a vampire in New Moon. OF COURSE, for Katara, they had to pick a pale skinned girl. Aang is all right, but he looks a bit stuck up... I don't know the word for it. :[ But he looks like he's trying too hard to look so serious. I'm hoping that's just in the picture.

I don't mind Dev Patel for Zuko, because his acting is good--I've no doubt about that. It just bothers me the way I see Zuko--strong facial features, semi-strong build... I just don't see it in Dev. And I know a lot of Asian actors {yes, honeys, just because Hollywood is all that you've seen, doesn't mean the rest of the world can't act} that would fit that description. I say Asian because--the kind of hairstyle Zuko wears, the robes and clothing he wears--I feel like that would look "better" on an East Asian guy.

Jack Nicholson, for example, would've made a GREAT Uncle Iroh. What I'm getting at is--race shouldn't be an issue, but AT LEAST make the actors look like the people they're playing, otherwise, don't name it "The Last Airbender"--make your own movie.

June 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRaine

Sara: WHAT THE FUCK?!

No scar, wrong race, wrong arrow, fire looks as if he's standing behind a fire display for a concert, and it's dumb.

Horrible.

Melissa: Honestly, if these people want to make a movie of a cartoon, shouldn't they stay true to that cartoon? Do they think anyone will be pleased with this in the least? It's just beyond me what these people are thinking. I will definitely NOT be seeing this- it disgraces the show that I, and many others, love.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSara&Melissa

Sara: Raine, sweetheart, it is publicly posted that he's a British actor with INDIAN parents.

Last time I checked that's not Asian, but who knows.

Melissa: By the way...Toph isn't even in the movie, from what I've seen.

Sara: AND ZUKO IS SUPPOSED TO BE HOT!! :(

Sara: Woops! Sorry Raine, I misread and thought you were talking about the actor for the movie not the voice actor. :/

omg i cant believe they actually got that guy to play zuko!!!! Zuko is HOT that guy is so not hot!! Atleast sokka is super HOT!!!omg i love jackson Rathbone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hes mine!

Omfg people, really? Stop complaining about how Aang and Zuko dont look like they do in the cartoon. For one, nothing you can say will change them, because thayre already cast. As for Aang, no one ever said that he was Asian or White. Its an Asian STYLE cartoon. And for Zuko, who CARES if hes darkskinned? That doesnt mean he wont do a good job. If you would rather have horrible actors that cant do any martial arts but look exactly like the cartoons, make your own movie. Even though I dont like the person portraying Aang, Im not wasting my time complaining about it. Im using my time to look up other stuff about the movie.
