New DVD and Blu-ray releases - April 7, 2009

Here's what we've got on DVD and Blu-ray this week: "Doubt" with Meryl Streep; "Bedtime Stories" with Adam Sandler; "Yes Man" with Jim Carrey; "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with Keanu Reeves; "The Tale of Despereaux" and "No Country For Old Men."

DOUBT

John Patrick Shanley's big-screen adaptation of "Doubt" was one of my 10 favorite films of 2008, and I highly recommend adding this intriguing, passionate drama to your DVD collection. The cinematography of "Doubt" is not the film's strongest aspect, but excellent performances by Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis are definitely worth the investment. Plus, you can get a good deal on the standard version right here.

BEDTIME STORIES

If you have a bunch of loud kids running around and are in desperate need of a nap, Adam Sandler's Disney adventure "Bedtime Stories" may come in handy. If that's not the case, stay away from this one. The film is quite monotonous, the gags generally fail, and both dialogue and performances just can't get past the level of mediocrity. Get it here if you simply can't resist Adam Sandler.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

This one's another disappointment and not the kind of film I would purchase on DVD or Blu-ray. The first 20 minutes or so are suspenseful enough, but the plot soon takes off into a bad direction, and the result is a brainless sci-fi remake with lame characters and a boring story line. "Day" boasts some cool effects that may look awesome in high-def, but that's about it. The film is available in several editions with two or three discs.

YES MAN

Jim Carrey returns to the comedy genre in "Yes Man," and although I didn't hate this film as much as I thought I would, I admit I wasn't really impressed by it either. It's got some laughs and a decent enough performance by Carrey, but other than that, this is all pretty standard material. Definitely more fun than the previous two though, so you may want to check into getting it here.

THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX

What a snooze! To be honest, I don't fully remember everything that happened in this boring animated tale because I dozed off at least twice when I saw it in theaters. "The Tale of Despereaux" is a very slow-moving film, lacking suspense and surprises; two crucial things an animated family adventure should have at all cost. At least the animation didn't disappoint. Maybe your kids will like it.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2-Disc Blu-ray Edition)

Blu-ray fans, this is the one you HAVE to grab this week. "No Country For Old Men" was my second favorite film of 2008 (behind "There Will Be Blood"), and I am absolutely sure this high-def edition will blow your mind. Plus, it's got tons of special features. My colleague Clark Douglas has a sweet review at DVDVerdict.
