Generally, I don't appreciate remakes because they often represent a lack of ideas in Hollywood to come up with something new. Okay, there are some remakes I enjoyed, but more often than not, I'm hardly impressed by the newer versions. When I first read about Universal getting ready to redo David Cronenberg's great "Videodrome," I almost couldn't believe it.
But yes, the studio will remake the film, with Ehren Kruger ("The Ring," "The Brothers Grimm") writing the screenplay. I don't know about you, but I don't think this is a great idea. I mean, some films out there really deserve to be left alone, and remaking a film like "Videodrome" is just completely unnecessary.
Cronenberg's original film opened in 1983 and starred James Woods as a TV programmer who acquireds a show depicting murder and torture. Vareity says the film "will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller." Good luck with that. Just please don't mess it up completely!
