What to expect at the movies in April '09

This year's March at the movies has been a lot better than January and February, and while I still ended up seeing quite a bunch of weak flicks this month, I feel things are slowly improving. Well, April is coming up fast, and here is a brief look at what you can expect in theaters over the next 30 days.

The first weekend in April doesn't look that bad, primarily because I'm really excited to check out Greg Mottola's latest comedy "Adventureland." In the film, Jesse Eisenberg plays a college grad who takes on a job at a local amusement park. The trailer looks hilarious, the cast sounds great too, and with "Superbad," Mottola already proved he's capable of delivering top-notch comedy.

Also opening April 3 is Justin Lin's anticipated sequel "Fast & Furious," starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. I'm not sure they'll be able to reboot this franchise with style, but the recent trailers and TV spots at least promise plenty of explosive car action. That's what this is all about anyway, right?

Okay, the following week doesn't look that awesome. Fox will release "Dragonball Evolution," a flick I am simply not looking forward too. I've been getting plenty of hate mail for trashing the footage I've seen so far, but I really don't care. "Hannah Montana: The Movie" will also debut April 8, and all I can say about this one is that I am clearly NOT among the film's target audience. But I will give it a shot anyway.

Seth Rogen also returns to the big screen in "Observe and Report," and yeah, that's the first flick I'm reeeeaaaaalllly looking forward to in April. I've been checking out that hilarious red band trailer for a while now, and it just gets funnier every time I watch it.

Zac Efron will also be showing up on the screen in April, and this time, he's playing a guy getting a shot at being "17 Again." Frankly, the film sounds and looks crappy, and my best guess is it will strictly appeal to all those Efron fans out there. Is there anything funny about this guy? Nooooooooooo...

That same weekend, Jason Statham returns for "Crank 2: High Voltage." I highly enjoyed the first "Crank," and while I know this sequel will be a gazillion times more brainless and implausible, I'm still looking forward to its fast-paced plot and stupid action sequences. Kevin Macdonald's "State of Play" is also part of the wide releases that week, and it sure boasts a fine cast (it also looks pretty intriguing at this stage).

Rounding out April are three more wide releases. Channing Tatum and Terrence Howard will team up in "Figthing," a drama about a guy making money... fighting... Let's just hope this won't turn into another "Never Back Down." We've also got "Obsessed," a thriller starring Beyonce as a badass wife fighting with his husband's stalker. Trailer looks rather ridiculous and reveals the whole film, but who knows, I'm sure Beyonce's fans can't wait to see her smack somebody on the big screen.

Finally, the film I am looking forward to most this coming month is Joe Wright's "The Soloist." I love Wright's work, I'm really intrigued by this film's story, and I am utterly excited to see how Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx connect on the screen in this musical drama. With a bit of luck, this could be the first real masterpiece of 2009. We'll see...
