Pixar will kick it up a notch at this year's edition of the Cannes Film Festival, premiering its latest animated feature "Up" on opening night.
Yep, for the first time in the prestigious festival's history, an animated 3D flick will launch almost two weeks of cinema celebration.
Still, several animated movies have been previously screened at the festival, including "Kung Fu Panda," "Over the Hedge" and the two first "Shrek" films.
In "Up," 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen decides to finally fulfill his dream and explore the globe. But instead of catching a plane ride, Carl builds his own transportation by tying thousands of balloons to his home.
Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, John Ratzenberger, Delroy Lindo and Jordan Nagai are part of the film's voice cast.
Apparently, one of the reasons to screen "Up" on opening night is the festival's intention to promote 3D cinema technology. Cannes runs May 13-24, 2009. "Up" will land in theaters May 29.
