This week's new movie releases - Feb. 6, 2009

I can only hope this week of new movie releases will turn out better than the last, and at this stage, things look pretty good. This week's releases are: Henry Selick's "Coraline," Paul McGuigan's "Push," Ken Kwapis' "He's Just Not That Into You" and Harald Zwart's "The Pink Panther 2."

CORALINE

Synopsis: Coraline Jones is bored in her new home until she finds a secret door and discovers an alternate version of her life on the other side. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life and the people in it – only much better. But when this seemingly perfect world turns dangerous, and her other parents try to trap her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to escape this increasingly perilous world – and save her family.

First thoughts: I love Selick's "The Nightmare Before Christmas," and I am proud to admit I've been excited about this project ever since I first heard about it. The trailer looks gorgeous, the story sounds intriguing enough, and I can only hope the 3D effect will be just as awesome as in "My Bloody Valentine 3-D."

PUSH

Synopsis: A riveting action-thriller, "Push" burrows deep into the deadly world of psychic espionage where artificially enhanced paranormal operatives have the ability to move objects with their minds, see the future, create new realities and kill without ever touching their victims. Against this setting, a young man and a teenage girl take on a clandestine agency in a race against time that will determine the future of civilization.

First thoughts: Okay, even though this sounds like a big-screen version of "Heroes," "Push" looks incredibly interesting. With "Lucky Number Slevin" McGuigan proved he's got what it take to create a fast-paced action thriller, and I expect no less from this sci-fi flick. This is actually the film I am looking forward to most this week.

HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU

Synopsis: A group of interconnected, Baltimore-based twenty- and thirtysomethings navigate their various relationships from the shallow end of the dating pool through the deep, murky waters of married life, trying to read the signs of the opposite sex -- and hoping to be the exceptions to the "no-exceptions" rule.

First thoughts: I never read the book the film is based on, so I have no idea what I'm actually in for. Still, the trailer looks entertaining enough, and I already find it hard to resist the charm of Ginnifer Goodwin.

THE PINK PANTHER 2

Synopsis: When legendary treasures from around the world are stolen, including the priceless Pink Panther Diamond, Chief Inspector Dreyfus is forced to assign Inspector Clouseau to a team of international detectives and experts charged with catching the thief and retrieving the stolen artifacts.

First thoughts: This is the only release I couldn't care less about this weekend. The first one was a terrible disaster, and I have a strong feeling this sequel will be even worse. That's all I have to say about it.
