James Cameron really is the king of the world right now, considering his latest sci-fi action spectacle "Avatar" is dominating the worldwide box office. Overseas, the film bagged $145 million this weekend.
"Avatar" lifted its international total to $405 million, which means its worldwide gross currently stands at an impressive $617.3 million after a little more than one week in release. That's not bad for an early gross.
Following in second place this weekend was "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which earned a solid $36.5 million in 42 territories. Domestically, the film grossed $77 million this week.
Meanwhile, Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" picked up $26 million in 17 markets. Following in fourth place with $7 million was Disney's "The Princess and the Frog," which brought its cumulative gross to $27 million.
Finally, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" finished fifth with a weekend gross of $5.8 million, reaching an overseas total of $389.3 million. Nancy Meyers' comedy "It's Complicated" earned $5.4 million in 11 markets.
