'Sherlock Holmes' arrests competition at box office

Sherlock Holmes beats box office

It's been a massive Christmas Day at the North American box office, as Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" defeated its competition with an estimated $24.8 million in ticket sales at 3,626 locations.

Meanwhile, James Cameron's "Avatar" came in second, earning a solid $23.5 million. The film's total gross currently stands at $160.7 million. "Avatar" scored an average of $6,800 per theater at 3,456 locations.

At No. 3, Betty Thomas' "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" bagged $14.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $41.3 million after three days in release. The film is playing at 3,700 locations.

Nancy Meyers' new movie "It's Complicated" opened in fourth place Friday, generating $7 million from ticket sales at 2,887 locations. Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin star in the romantic comedy.

Also breaking into the top 10 was Jason Reitman's "Up in the Air," which expanded into 1,895 theaters and picked up $3.5 million at No. 5. "The Blind Side" followed closely in sixth place with $3.3 million.

So, what film will win the weekend race? Something tells me "Avatar" may beat "Holmes" by peanuts, but then again, you never know. I mean, I saw people line up for "Holmes" an hour before screenings yesterday.
