Sad day in America as 'Chipmunks' beats 'Avatar' at box office!

The Squeakquel sucks big time!

I feared this would happen, and it did: Betty Thomas' "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" topped the North American box office this Wednesday with a surprisingly solid $18.8 million in ticket sales.

I know it's hard to believe, but the atrociously crappy "Chipmunks" sequel actually dethroned "Avatar." Meanwhile, James Cameron's sci-fi epic dropped to second place with a daily gross of $16.4 million.

"Avatar" brought its domestic total to $125.9 million, and I can only hope it will end up beating "The Squeakquel" this weekend. The new competition includes "Sherlock Holmes" and "It's Complicated."

Anyway, it's sad to see so many Americans taking their kids to a pathetic show featuring annoying CGI chipmunks without a brain. This just proves that stupidity has a way of attracting folks to theaters.

At a distant No. 3, Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" collected another $2.4 million Wednesday, lifting its total gross to $53.2 million. Following in fourth place with $2.1 million was "The Blind Side."

Alright, I know this won't help, but I call upon all parents to skip "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and take their loved ones to something else instead. This whole "Squeakquel" success just looks and feels so wrong...

I feel there is no good served in making comments like "atrociously crappy" when describing the "Chipmunks" sequel. Of course it beat out "Avatar" on Wednesday! "Avatar" is hardly a family film. I wouldn't take my niece to see the nice, blue aliens terrorized when she could laugh at talking/singing chipmunks. Too many people get all high and mighty with movies. I am very excited to see "Avatar" for myself, but I think it is of very low class to say that people are attracted by stupidity. Accept the fact that the "Chipmunks" movie provides entertainment and a safe place for parents or families to bring their children. When you're with your child, niece, nephew, etc. and you get to see the look on their faces as they watch those "annoying CGI chipmunks without a brain"...it will be well worth the money spent.

All i can say is that, if given the choice between showing chipmunks and blue aliens , I would choose the less kid friendly blue aliens coz chipmunks is a morally empty moronic entertainment peice which serves no purpose other than to show some REALLY annoying chipmunks

avatar shown to children will teach them about equality, caring for the environment and making stand for the right thing, smilar lessons were there in star wars, believe in yourself, one man can bring a change, etc

Alvin on the other hand doesnt have anything other than to teach that chipmunks ARE really annoying and can talk too sometimes...

All right don't get too excited about this Sherlock Holmes box office collection has to come it can put dent on both of them or but I still think that Avatar will win this weekend it is a better movie than the other's which are coming out and has great word of mouth .I am hoping to catch it again in 3d .

"Sad day" maybe in your opinion. I'd rather watch Chipmunks than Smurfs any day. Nothing sad about people "voting" with their pocketbooks. Avatar was pretty bad though, I can see why it had a drop-off.

I agree with Keith I wouldn't take my young children who are out of school for the holidays to see Avatar, my wife and I will be taking them to see Alvin and the Chipmunks because they're children and they want to see the movie.

Like I said in my review as well, I love kids, but they buy anything they see on the big screen. It's great to see them laugh, yes, but that doesn't automatically make a film a masterpiece. Far from it.
