This week's new movie releases - Dec. 25, 2009
Opening this week are "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" with Robert Downey Jr., and Nancy Meyers' "It's Complicated" with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin.

SHERLOCK HOLMES (with Robert Downey Jr.)
Synopsis: In a dynamic new portrayal of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters, “Sherlock Holmes” sends Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.
First thoughts: I saw "Sherlock Holmes" yesterday and really enjoyed it. Sadly, that's all I am allowed to say about it at this time. Look for my review Dec. 25, 2009.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL
Synopsis: David Seville and chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore, return in the sequel to lay waste to Seville's surroundings and sing in three-part harmony. The sequel movie introduce the Chipmunks' female counterparts, the Chipettes.
First thoughts: "The Squeakquel" opens Dec. 23, 2009. Saw this one last week, and I hated it. Of course, I hated the first one as well, so there was not much hope left for this one in the first place. Read my review tomorrow.

IT'S COMPLICATED (with Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin)
Synopsis: Jane (Streep) is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has—after a decade of divorce—an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Baldwin). But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son’s college graduation, things start to get complicated. An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable—an affair.
First thoughts: I love Nancy Meyers' work, and I am very excited to see this one. It looks lile a sophisticated comedy filled with superb performances. My excitement meter for this one: 8/10.
