'Avatar' storms worldwide box office with $232M

James Cameron's "Avatar" also topped the international box office this weekend with a stunning opening of $159.2 million in 106 markets. Domestically, the 3D sci-fi epic adventure bagged $73 million.
That brings the weekend total of the action spectacle to $232.2 million; an impressive result. The film's budget is now estimated at a massive $280 million, not including the 100+ million for marketing.
Also making a lot of money is "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which bagged another $10.7 million at No. 2 for a total overseas gross of $381.1 million. Worldwide, the sequel has now grossed $655.7 million.
Following in third place was "2012," which reached $574.1 million after this weekend's earnings of $9.3 million. "A Christmas Carol" took home $6.3 million at No. 4, and "The Princess and the Frog" pulled $5.7 million at No. 5.
Also, Pixar's "Up" is about to beat "Ratatouille" ($414 million total), as the animated adventure generated $4.4 million for a cumulative gross of $409.8 million.
Other cumulatives grosses overseas include: "Old Dogs" with $15.7 million, "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" with $75 million, "Couples Retreat" with $47.6 million and "Ninja Assassin" with $19.3 million.
