67th Annual Golden Globes Nominations

I don't particularly care about the Golden Globes much, but the 67th annual Globes ceremony is coming up soon, so here is a quick summary of this year's nominations. Any big surprises? Not exactly.

Best drama: "Avatar," "The Hurt Locker," "Inglourious Basterds," "Up in the Air" and "Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire" all made the cut. I'm glad to see "Avatar" is a part of the race.

In the best musical or comedy category, "Nine," "Julie & Julia," "The Hangover," "(500) Days of Summer" and "It's Complicated" earned a nomination. I bet "Julie & Julia" could win this thing, but you never know...

Moving on to best director, Kathryn Bigelow was nominated for "The Hurt Locker," and she's got a huge chance of getting this one. James Cameron also made the cut, and so did Clint Eastwood for "Invictus."

The remaining two directors in the race are Jason Reitman for "Up in the Air," and Quentin Tarantino for "Inglourious Basters." I don't expect any surprises here. I believe Bigelow got this one.

Actor in a drama: Jeff Bridges for "Crazy Heart," "George Clooney" in "Up in the Air," Colin Firth in "A Single Man," Morgan Freeman in "Invictus" and Tobery Maguire in "Brothers." My pick: Jeff Bridges.

Actress in a drama: Emily Blunt for "The Young Victoria," Sandra Bullock for "The Blind Side" (what??), Helen Mirren for "The Last Station," Gabourey Sidibe in "Precious" and Carey Mulligan in "An Education."

Best actor in a musical/comedy: Matt Damon for "The Informant!," Daniel Day-Lewis in "Nine," "Robert Downey Jr. in "Sherlock Holmes," Joseph Gordon-Levitt in "(500) Days of Summer" and Michael Stuhlbarg in "A Serious Man."

Sandra Bullock is also nominated as best actress in a musical/comedy for "The Proposal," and Meryl Streep is nominated for both "It's Complicated" and "Julie & Julia." She will win this one for sure.

Also nominated for best actress are Marion Cotillard for "Nine" and Julia Roberts for "Duplicity" (that's a surprise). Supporting actresses are Penelope Cruz, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Mo'Nique and Julianne Moore.

In the category for best supporting actor, Matt Damon has a shot for "Invictus," Woody Harrelson got a nod for "The Messenger," and Christopher Plummer got one for "The Last Station."

Also nominated are Stanley Tucci for "The Lovely Bones," and of course, Christoph Waltz for "Inglourious Basterds." I'm going nuts if he doesn't take this one home; he's the best of all of these guys this year.

The animated film nominees are: "Up," "The Princess and the Frog," "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." I am rooting for "Mr. Fox."

Best screenplay picks: Neill Blomkamp for "District 9," Mark Boal for "The Hurt Locker," Nancy Meyers for "It's Complicated," Jason Reitman/Sheldon Turner for "Up in the Air," and Quentin Tarantino for "Basterds."

"Baaria," "Broken Embraces," "The Maid," "A Prophet" and "The White Ribbon" will compete for the best foreign film Globe.

Presentation of “The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards” Live telecast on NBC at 5 PM PST and 8 PM EST on Jan. 17, 2010. Ricky Gervais will host the show.
