It has begun! James Cameron's anticipated spectacle "Avatar" was screened for us critics last week, and the New York Film Critics Online on Sunday named the upcoming sci-fi action epic the best film of 2009.
"Avatar," however, only took home one award. It was Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" that was named winner in four different categories, starting with best screenplay by Quentin Tarantino.
The violent WWII drama also won best cinematography for Robert Richardson, and actor Christopher Waltz took home the awards for best supporting actor and breakthrough performer. That's good to hear!
Jeff Bridges was named best actor for his role in "Crazy Heart," while Meryl Streep won in the best actress category for "Julie & Julia." Mo'Nique took home the award for best supporting actress for "Precious."
Kathryn Bigelow was voted best director for "The Hurt Locker," and Marc Webb was named top debut director for "(500) Days of Summer." "In the Loop" won best ensemble cast.
Also, Pixar's "Up" took best animated film, while "The Cove" won best documentary. "The White Ribbon" won in the best foreign language category. Lastly, "Crazy Heart" scored the best film music award.
The New York Film Critics Online picked 10 best films, and the list includes "Up in the Air," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "Adventureland," "The Messenger," "A Serious Man," "Two Lovers" and "Avatar," "Up," "Locker" and "Basterds."

I'd agree, it was by far the best movie I saw in 2009. I wasn't expecting such a good movie, in fact, I thought it looked kind of dumb by the previews. I finally went to see it in 3D and it was probably one of the best movies I've ever seen.
