It's done! "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" just beat the opening day gross of "The Dark Knight." Wait, what? No, this is not a mistake; "New Moon" did indeed score an amazing $72.7 million Friday.
The Chris Weitz-directed sequel to "Twilight" already pulled $26.2 million from midnight screenings yesterday. Now playing in 4,024 theaters, it raced past the $67.1 million opening day gross of "Knight."
"New Moon" is now easily on track to beat $100 million this weekend, but I'm not quite sure it will manage to top the $158 million "The Dark Knight" brought in during the first three days. We'll see what happens.
At a distant No. 2, Sandra Bullock's new film "The Blind Side" opened with a solid $10.9 million at 3,110 locations. The drama follows a conservative mother helping out a homeless young man.
Following in third place with $8.1 million was Roland Emmerich's apocalyptic action adventure "2012," which brought its cumulative gross to $89.8 million after one week in release.
Still going strong Friday was "Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire," which collected $3.6 million for a total haul of $13.9 million. New entry "Planet 51" followed at No. 5 with a daily gross of $3.1 million.

Its ridiculous. But one of those films that will be forgotten by Christmas. TDK had incredible word of mouth. More people went to see it later on than in the beginning.
That's what I am talking about now Frank you are posting things fast.As far as this movie I agree with on you that but I'm not quite sure it will manage to top the $158 million "The Dark Knight" brought in during the first three day. This movie has got bad reviews and it will fall in the coming days .After the first weekend there will no Twilight fans to watch it only regular people let's see how do they find it fascinating I thought it sucked .
Let's see how much it brings in overseas market it will be interesting if it puts 2012 down in the international market and brings more money.
It will be an interesting race yes. And I agree with you nick, admissions will certainly drop really fast after this week.
