Chris Weitz's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" has not yet officially kicked off its North American run in theatres, but the film is already scoring money and setting new records in several overseas markets.
Early numbers are in already, and the Hollywood Reporter says the sequel to "Twilight" has scored $1.6 million from midnight screenings in Australia. That's better than what "Star Wars: Episode III" bagged in '05.
Moving on, "New Moon" picked up $4.26 million in France on opening day, compared to $1.1 million earned by "Twilight." Wow! In Italy, it generated $2.7 million, and in Spain, it grabbed $2.2 million.
This time, Bella (Kristen Stewart) is devestated by the sudden departure of Edward (Reobert Pattinson), her vampire sweetie. That's when she slowly finds herself drawn to Jacob (Taylor Lautner).
It's pretty safe to say "New Moon" will explode at the box office in North America this weekend. Could it beat $100 million? Well... we'll have to wait and see. I fear a bit for this week's other releases though.
Dang it, who could've thought that a story about a stiff chick and her sweetie blood sucker would pull this many folks and bucks? I'm still amazed by all the "Twilight" craze worldwide.
