Alejandro Amenábar 'Agora' gets U.S. release

Rachel Weisz in Agora

Good news for Alejandro Amenábar fans! The acclaimed filmmaker's latest movie "Agora" has finally found a buyer that will distribute the war epic in the United States. Thank you, Newmarket Films.

Newmarket will release the film in early 2010. It was produced on an estimated budget of $73 million and has already bagged $30 million in Spain, where it opened a few weeks ago, according to THR.

In the film, violent religious upheaval in the streets of Alexandria spills over into the city’s famous Library. Inside, the brilliant astronomer Hypatia and her disciples fight to save the wisdom of the Ancient World.

Rachel Weisz plays the lead in the English-language film, which played at Canned earlier this year. Amenábar also directed "Mar adentro," "The Others," "Open your eyes" and "Tesis."
