Sony Pictures' Michael Jackson documentary "This Is It" is heading into the weekend with a two-day domestic gross of $11.2 million. This includes the $2.2 million the film bagged from shows Tuesday night.
An anticipated release, "This Is It" is currently showing in conventional theaters and IMAX, and it's playing at an impressive 3,481 locations in North America. The film scored $20.1 million worldwide Wedesday.
Ticket sales will certainly pick up during the weekend, especially because "This Is It" is the only wide release this week. Sony's even looking at extending the theatrical run of the film.
Most of the film's footage was shot in June 2009 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. It include scenes drawn from hours of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage.
Other films that should do well at the box office this weekend are "Paranormal Activity," which reached a total of $68.2 million Thursday, and "Law Abiding Citizen," whose total currently stands at $44 million.
BTW, I will see "This Is It" tomorrow and will post my review asap. I've been too busy lately, but I'm slowly catching up.
