Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' bags $20M

Sony's Michael Jackson documentary "This Is It" is off to a decent start. The Kenny Ortega-helmed film generated a solid $20.1 million worldwide, with $7.4 million coming from domestic results.
An anticipated release, "This Is It" is currently showing in conventional theaters and IMAX, and it's playing at an impressive 3,481 locations in North America. Overseas, the film is playing in 99 markets.
Early screenings of the documentary took place Tuesday evening in North America, generating $2.2 million. Its performance Wednesday is the highest gross for a Wednesday release in October.
The majority of the film's footage was shot in June 2009 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. It include scenes drawn from hours of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage.
When the project entered development, the Estate of Michael Jackson, administered by Jackson's longtime attorney John Branca and veteran music executive John McClain, announced their full support for "This Is It."
