Denzel Washington to star in ‘Book of Eli’

Denzel Washington has signed on to star in Allen and Albert Hughes’ upcoming drama “Book of Eli,” according to Variety.

In the post-apocalyptic film, Washington will play a hero who travels across America to pass on the knowledge of what could be society’s way to redemption.

The Hughes brothers are directing Gary Whitta’s script, which Anthony Peckham rewrote. Joel Silver is on board to produce the project.

Washington recently starred in Ridley Scott's "American Gangster" and "The Great Debaters," which he also directed. He will next be seen in Tony Scott's remake of "The Taking of Pelham 123."

"The Book of Eli" markes the Hughes brothers' first directorial effort since the 2001 Johnny Depp vehicle "From Hell." As for Peckham, he also recently wrote the script for Clint Eastwood's upcoming project "The Human Factor,"a look at the life of Nelson Mandela.
