The new big-screen version of “Flash Gordon” is quickly shoved through development, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Now that Sony has acquired the rights to produce the film, the studio has hired screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to write the script for the sci-fi action flick.
Based on a comic strip created by Alex Raymond in 1934, the story centers on a talented polo player who’s kidnapped and taken to the planet Mongo, where he and his friends Dale Arden and Hans Zarkov struggle to take down a ruthless leader known as Ming the Merciless.
Sazama and Sharpless are also currently writing Universal’s “Dracula Year Zero” and “Cobalt 60.”
Raymond’s “Flash Gordon” has inspired several features and a recent TV series.
