Not that many people went to see "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" this weekend, and I guess some of it has to do with the film's rather weak quality. Most of the nation's top critics didn't like the film at all, and as you can see below, critics on the Web didn't give it a warm welcome either (well, there is an exception). Now I'm really wondering who's going to tune in when the animated television series debuts this fall. We'll see what's left to discover in the galaxy far, far away.
• Josh Tyler at CinemaBlend: "For the first movie about something which George Lucas describes as the “World War II of Star Wars”, it’s decidedly small scale. After an interesting, large-scale ground battle it quickly falls back into the same, small, bookended commando style, ground missions we saw in the live-action movies."
• RopeOfSilicon's Brad Brevet: "Sure, there are blasters and light sabers, but guess what, we have seen that before... many times. Oh wait, but this time they are animated and weilded by bobble-headed dolls! Well, damn, I guess that makes it super-stupid. My bad."
• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "What once was a landmark and influential piece of entertainment is now slowly turning into some cosmic joke. I'm sure his defense for this piece is that like the original films, it is a fairytale for children."
• Collider's Brian Orndorf: "Instead, the film is a romp; a burst of wall-to-wall action and high-energy duels that plays merrily in the "Star Wars" sandbox without the burden of narrative connection. It's slight, but effective, only requiring a crash helmet for a few of the script's more outrageous and ill-conceived characterizations."
• Cole Abaius at Filmschoolrejects: "The main problem for this film was pacing. The battle sequences are incredible, innovative, and fun to watch, but they are almost always going on. The audience barely gets any relief from the war to reflect on what they’ve seen."
• And Joblo's Chris Bumbray: "Easily the worst film of 2008 so far. George Lucas should be ashamed. Also, if people think I'm being overly harsh on a film designed for kids, I should note that the screening I was at was full of kids, and they were all restless or sleeping by the time the film was over."
Well, ther you have it. Lucas definitely joined the dark force.
