Yes, you read right. Angelina Jolie is expected to replace Tom Cruise in Columbia Pictures’ upcoming spy thriller “Edwin A. Salt,” according to Variety.
Although most of the story will remain intact, screenwriter Kurt Wimmer will rewrite as much as is needed to turn the leading male character into a woman.
If the deal with Jolie works out, she will play a CIA officer who’s accused of being a Russian sleeper spy.
Cruise was attached to star in the Philip Noyce-directed thriller for quite a while, but he recently dropped the project.
“Edwin A. Salt” will obviously undergo a title change as well. We’ll keep you posted on that.
Jolie recently starred in Universal’s action hit “Wanted.” She will next be seen in Clint Eastwood’s “The Changeling,” which premiered at Cannes earlier this year.
Maybe I haven’t been around long enough, but I’ve never heard of a film being rewritten to fit a leading actor of a different gender. Oh well, I prefer to watch Jolie on the big screen anyway.

What about Alien? Ripley was not envisaged as a female role until Sigourney Weaver was cast.
