Sony is gearing up for the development of “Venom,” a “Spider-Man” spinoff based on the villain who appeared in Spidey’s third installment last year.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony already took a look at a draft written by Jacob Estes (screenwriter of “Mean Creek”), but the studio is currently seeking new writers to pen the script.
One question that comes up at this point is the potential cast. Topher Grace played Venom in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3,” but at this stage it’s unclear whether the studio will try to bring him back.
The good thing about this is that in the third “Spider-Man” flick, Venom was essentially a parasite looking for a host. This opens up more choices when it comes to casting a lead actor.
Personally, I think Venom did not receive the development it deserved in “Spider-Man 3.” In fact, it was the first villain in the franchise I really didn’t care about a bit. With a bit of luck, the screenwriters will do the character justice this time.
Although “Venom” is a clear departure from the “Spider-Man” series, Sony is currently developing “Spider-Man 4,” which should hit theaters in 2011.
I really wouldn’t mind watching a “Venom” feature, but considering the recent awesomeness of “Iron Man” and “The Dark Knight,” the scribes now face a massive challenge. Fans now expect so much more from a superhero movie, and they have every right to do so.

haha what a crap!
Wow... just wow...
The symbiote of Spider-man has been my favorite villain ever, from Venom to Carnage. Hell... the possibilities of writing there are just endlessly EVIL.
The writer better be packing, or I'll be packing myself away from the theater.
Beetle should be in the next spidey flic
Hope it's true. Venom is a great villian. Hope they don't use Topher again though. I thought his acting was sub-par, and he was a wimp when it came to working with the stunt dept. I doubled him when he got yanked out of the venom suit. Way too much complaining and not just doing what he is told. Topher could take some lessons of humility from James Franco in my opinion.....
Topher Grace did a great job, he's an actor, not a stunt-man. Changing actors for Venom would be a mistake, since his role is that of Eddie Brock and Eddie Brock becomes Venom. He also added a nice sense of humor and is quite the comic buff, and as such played his role within a fun and educated framework.
I hope Black Cat and The King Pin will be in the new spidey flick!
Man, Vemon is one of the best super villains ever and Spiderman 3 didn’t recognize that at all. He was supposed to be better than Spiderman in every way and they gave him a short 15 min @ the end of the movie only show that he dies such a bullcrap way. Topher Grace did a good job portraying Peter Parker without a conscious though when he became Vemon he could have dialed that drama down a little, but that was probably the dumb director’s decision. Hope they make the Vemon spinoff the way he should have been introduced in Spiderman 3. Wish they would put him in the 4th one and actually show an all out brawl between them but Carnage wouldnt be a bad choice, they better give him the spotlight he deserves though.
i think insted of bringing venom back i think you should put Carnage in it and the lizzerd. just inmajin it Dr. conner turns in to the lizzerd and destros the lad (in spidy 3 he gave the doc a litte symbeot so if he breaks it the glass box,it run into cassidy where he gets taken to jail. the litte guy goes some where on the cope car (like when it went on pete's bike)and the find him and turn into Carnage.
i wrote a litte more then that
WOW 'me' u thought a lot bout the next movie huh? Though that would be a great action movie (hoping there isnt no gay dancing part in it) but the 15 min window venom got should have been given to carnage since he really as no back story just crazy guy doing crazy things, like The Joker in The Dark Knight they introduced him with action and did it the whole movie. With Venom they should have gave him,at least, a longer window of intro but like i said before they BETTER GIVE CARNAGE THAT AND NO LESS
Im hearing roumours of jim carry as carnage in 4 and or 5. i read some where that they were discussing it with him. i think he could be perfect. carnage is a sadistic fuck. throw a symbiote on the cable guy...its genious
