Great Movie Moments #1 – ‘The Village’

Welcome to the very first edition of The Screening Log’s “Great Movie Moments” series, a selection of specific scenes that caught my attention and left a long-lasting impression on me. Most of the scenes you will see here are taken from flicks already released on DVD, but you may occasionally stumble across one from a current theatrical release.

For this first edition, I picked M. Night Shyamalan’s 2004 mystery “The Village.” Although it’s certainly not one of my favorite films, there’s one scene in the movie that really gave me the chills, not because it’s scary, but rather because of how beautifully it is set up, shot and edited.

In this scene, Joaqun Phoenix prevents Bryce Dallas Howard from being attacked by one of these creatures the villagers are so afraid of. The camera angles in this scene really work for me, and Hilary Hahn’s musical piece goes wonderfully with the footage. You may not find this scene exciting at all, but I have to admit it gave me goose pimples. Enjoy.

I agree this is a beautiful scene. I just saw the movie for the first time, and that scene gave me chills when I saw it. I am glad this film is not as frightening as Signs, M. Night Shaymalan's previous film; I don't think I could handle anything else that terrifying!

Agreed; saw this movie for the first time this evening and ended up watching that scene again after the movie had ended. Watching a scene again like that is not something I do often (actually, I can't remember the last time).

A great scene indeed. Not to be too cheesy (SPOILER) but when she jumped the fence and you see a Land Rover I actually laughed out loud. In the good/surprised as hell way. I know people baste this movie but to me "the twist" in The Village was one of his best. I'm dead already - saw it coming. Sam Jackson was really the bad guy - saw that coming. Water kills the aliens - stoopid. But the Village had a true twist that I never saw coming. When "kevin" the security guard see's BDH jumping the fence I was shocked. Also, when you see in his face that he's made the decision to help her was also a beautiful moment in the film.

This movie gives me chills whenever I watch it. Just one of the better ones of Shyalmalan, and I'm still pretty scared even though I've already seen it. That scene is really great--the hand reaching out, and the red thing in the background! Crazy!

I loved this scene as well, Its almost as if they are doing a beautiful dance as they twirl into the house. It truly is one of M.Night's best movies. The whole movie is just amazing and beautifully done.

The Village is one of my favourite movies, and for many, many reasons, one of which being the idea behind why the characters are living the life they are living. But this scene has to be one of my favourites from the movie! When I play the soundtrack I love this piece, with Hahn's divine solo violin coming in. I love the slow motion. I love the tension. I love the emotion and faith and passion between Lucius and Ivy that transcends this scene.
