Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is in talks to play the titular character in Tim Burton’s upcoming version of “Alice in Wonderland,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Wasikowska is known primarily for her appearances on the Australian TV show “All Saints” and HBO’s “In Treatment.” Her future big-screen projects include Edward Zwick’s war drama “Defiance” and Mira Nair’s Amelia Earhart biopic “Amelia.”

Now she’s set to play Alice in Burton’s new take on Lewis Carroll’s famous novel. The Walt Disney-produced project will head into principal photography later this year, with a release in Digital 3-D scheduled for 2010.

I really can’t comment on the selection of Wasikowska as Alice because I haven’t seen any of her shows yet, but with Burton on board as her director, I’m sure she can pull this one off without major difficulties. Looking at the aforementioned projects, I think she’s got a bright career ahead of her.
