It may not be the most anticipated movie of the summer, but Eric Brevig’s “Journey to the Center of the World” is definitely worth a look in 3-D. It’s certainly not a sophisticated flick as far as the main story line is concerned, but the 3-D effects are compelling enough to keep you busy for 92 minutes (read our review here). Now let’s see what other Web critics have to say about the new version of Jules Verne’s classic tale.
• Chris Bumbray at Joblo.com: “The 3D effects are not the slightest bit realistic, and the whole film pretty much consists of Fraser, Briem & Hutcherson throwing things at the screen, or running away from cartoon-y 3D CGI dinosaurs, plants, and mutant fish.”
• Cinema Blend’s Katey Rich: “’Journey 3D’ is predictable, cheesy and not even a little edgy, but it's also as much fun as you're likely to have in a PG movie this summer.”
• Brad Brevet at RopeofSilicon.com: “’Journey to the Center of the Earth’ is a good bit of fun and offers up enough action scenes to make it worth a trip to the theater.”
• Cinematical’s Eric D. Snider: “Much of what happens is hard to swallow even for a viewer who has willingly suspended his disbelief, and moments of genuine suspense are rare.”
• Brian Orndorf at Collider.com: "While the 3-D keeps the overall image muted and muddy, it's perhaps a better alternative to actually accepting Brevig's vision: a smothering, limited buffet of overactive CGI and cold studio environments that provide little to no depth."
• LatinoReview’s Ron Henriques: “Fraser's performance is in the same vein as his role in 'The Mummy' franchise except he's added a slight bookworm touch and he's actually pretty good at it.“
As you can see, not everybody enjoyed the 3-D journey to the center of the world. Still, if you have a couple of youngsters begging you to take them to the movies this weekend, this is probably the best choice to keep them entertained.
