I’m pretty excited about seeing Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” later this afternoon (our review will be up shortly), and while most of the nation’s top critics give the film a thumbs up, let’s see how well it is received among those writing exclusively for the Web. As usual, click on the highlighted names to read the entire articles.
• Cinema Blend’s Josh Tyler: “’The Golden Army’ is a must see, whether you’re already a Hellboy fan or not. If you’re not, by the time you walk out, you will be.”
• Jette Kernion at Cinematical: “It's worth a trip to the theater to experience the visual richness at its fullest.”
• Joblo’s JimmyO: “This time around, the beasties are even more fantastic, but more importantly, the Hellboy humor is even sharper.”
• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: “Unlike the first feature, this picture feels more comfortable in its own skin and as Del Toro continues to evolve and branch out as a filmmaker and risk taker it's nice to know he's growing more comfortable in his.”
• Collider’s Brian Orndorf: “I enjoyed "Golden Army" much more than the original "Hellboy," but the concept still needs a fixation outside of ghouls and goblins.”
• Adam Frazier at Moviehole.net: “We are treated to a wonderful animated envisioning of humanity battling mythical beasts.”
• RopeofSilicon’s Brad Brevet: “While this film is visually on par with ‘Pan,’ the story feels like people had way too much time on their hands and just continued to add scenes that should have been left on the cutting room floor.”
As you can see, most of these takes on the new “Hellboy” flick are pretty positive. If you don’t have a problem with a red guy from hell saving the world, you should definitely check it out.
