‘Sex’ triumphs overseas
Now that “Sex and the City” expanded into 40 territories overseas, the chick flick finally kicked “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” off the foreign box office throne. According to numbers provided by The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema’s adaptation of the popular HBO series took in $38.2 million at the top spot of the international box office this weekend.
“Crystal Skull” dropped to No. 2, collecting $36 million from ticket sales in 60 markets. Steven Spielberg’s sequel lifted its foreign total to $326 million after almost three weeks in release.
Also opening overseas was DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda,” which earned an impressive $20.7 million from only nine markets.
Here’s what else happened at the foreign box office this weekend: “What Happens in Vegas” booked $7.8 million and brought its international total to $107.9 million, while “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” pulled in $20.3 million.
Other foreign totals: “Iron Man” reached $249 million, “Made of Honor” lifted its total to $35 million and “21” moves up to $59.3 million.
