Trailer Review: “Religulous”

Our quick thoughts: No matter how many religious elements are stuffed into a movie these days, people usually don’t hit the barricades and rally against it, but as soon as a film has something to say against religion, chaos breaks out (especially in the Unites States).
Just consider the massive response to “The Golden Compass.” The producers even decided to cut out the anti-religious messages so the film could make more money. Well, in the U.S. it crashed nonetheless, but everywhere else it was a huge success. But there are some people who just don't care what other people think. Bill Maher, for instance, is such a person, and I admire him for it.
In his upcoming documentary “Religulous,” Maher travels the world and interviews people about religion (and that includes official representatives from different religions). Maher is known for dropping some pretty heavy comments against religion, sure, but he’s got the guts to tackle this controversial issue and discuss it from a point of view we usually don’t see on the big screen.
It’s always a bad sign when a trailer for a documentary uses “from the studio that brought you ‘Fahrenheit 911,’” but Maher’s comments and his questions here are just hilarious. I can’t say he’s going to keep this approach in the entire film, but from what you see in this preview, he doesn’t attack religious people, but he rather asks them funny and sometimes clever questions that make some religious thoughts or practices look a little doubtful indeed.
If you’re a conservative or religious person yourself, you’re probably going to curse this film and stay away from it, but all those who are not sure what to make of religion, and those who don’t hold any religious beliefs, will probably have a great time with Maher. This trailer is highly amusing, so make sure to check it out HERE or just below.
