John Turturro is set to direct an adaptation of Edoardo Filippo’s Off-Broadway play “Souls of Naples,” according to Variety. Turturro also starred in the play, which is set in 1946 and follows a poverty-stricken couple moving into a haunted house without having to pay rent. Their landlord proposed the deal so the house looks less creepy, giving him the opportunity to start looking for paying residents.
The film will be in English, and production will begin in Naples sometime next year. Turturro is writing the script.
The Italian American filmmaker most recently directed “Romance & Cigarettes.” He also stars in Dennis Dugan’s comedy “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan,” which opens this Friday.
