Mike Myers is back on the big screen in Marco Schnabel’s “The Love Guru,” and while most of the nation’s top critics hate the new comedy to death, let’s see what online reviewers have to say about it. I decided to wait until Monday to see the film because I don’t want to ruin my weekend, but I’ll make sure to post my take on it here on the site shortly after the screening. As usual, feel free to share your thoughts about the film below.
• Cinema Blend’s Josh Tyler slapped the film with one and a half stars out of five, saying he pretty much hated the script and Mike Myers’ main character, the Guru Pitka. Here’s part of what Josh has to say about it:
“The movie’s script is even worse than Myers’ character, though perhaps its awfulness is a product in part, of how much Pitka sucks. It’s written as if simply watching Pitka on screen is all that matters, as if Myers assumed we’d find Pitka so funny that all he needed to do was write a script which invented an excuse to keep his guru on the screen.”Click here to read the entire review over at Cinema Blend.

• James Rocchi over at Cinematical pretty much shares Josh’s opinion, saying Myers’ character strongly resembles that of Austin Powers. Here’s an excerpt from Cinematical’s “Love Guru” review:
“Scattered, scatological and swamped with self-indulgence, “The Love Guru” is a great demonstration of the law of diminishing returns; the louder and larger it gets, the easier it becomes to ignore. I don't mind a comedy that goes over-the-top, but it has to at least start with its feet on the ground, or be truly hilarious.”Click here to read Rocchi’s entire review.

• Over at Joblo.com, JimmyO gives the film a five out of ten, which is actually not too bad of a result. He says it’s undoubtedly a silly comedy, but he also found himself laughing quite a bit. Let’s see what Joblo has to say about Myers’ big-screen return:
“So the question is, is this a good movie? Well, not necessarily good, but if you are a fan of Mike Myers I would recommend at least taking a look on DVD. Is it worth paying your hard earned dollars at the local theatre? Well that all depends on just how big of a Mike fan you really are.”Here’s the full version of JimmyO’s review.

• Finally, Ron Henriques from Latino Review appreciates Myers’ imagination, and while he thinks many jokes fall flat, he stumbled across quite a few that worked for him quite well. Here’s a tiny bit from Ron’s take:
“The Guru Pitka is nowhere near as interesting as Dr. Evil, Austin Powers, Wayne Campbell or even the old Scottish dad in “So I Married an Axe Murderer." There's nothing offensive about Myers' performance or the fact he's a white guy acting like an Indian because there is sincerity behind the character's peace and love approach.”Read all of this review right here.
