‘Indiana Jones’ rules overseas box office

indianajonesforeignboxoffice.jpgIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” may have failed to resist the power of “Sex and the City” at the North American box office, but the fourth installment in the popular adventure series took the No. 1 spot for the second consecutive week overseas.

But the race for the throne at the international box office was not a fair one. While Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones” sequel collected $71.5 million from a total of 60 markets, “Sex and the City” took home a stunning $39.2 million from only 13 territories.

According to Variety, the big-screen adaptation based on the successful HBO series will expand into more countries next weekend, looking to further increase its current worldwide total of $94.9 million. “Crystal Skull” has now reached a foreign total of $266 million after only two weeks in release.

Here’s what else went down overseas this past weekend: “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” pulled in $16.8 million, “What Happens in Vegas” collected $12.1 million and “Iron Man” earned $8 million.
