2008 MTV Movie Awards

mtv2008movielogo.jpgMichael Bay’s action spectacle “Transformers” won the award for best movie Sunday at the 2008 edition of the MTV Movie Awards.

But the real winner of the night was Johnny Depp, who took home two trophies for best comedic performance (“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”) and best villain (“Sweeney Todd”).

Will Smith took home the award for best male performance for his role in Francis Lawrence’s “I Am Legend,” beating fellow nominees Michael Cera, Denzel Washington, Matt Damon and Shia LaBeouf.

The golden popcorn trophy for best female performance went to Ellen Page for her role in Jason Reitman’s surprise hit comedy “Juno.”

Other winners included Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman, who scored the best kiss award; Sean Faris and Cam Gigandet, who received the award for best fight; and Zac Efron, who won in the best breakthrough category.

The trophy for best summer movie so far went to Jon Favreau’s “Iron Man,” who accepted the award with lead actor Robert Downey Jr.

While the MTV Movie Awards may be fun to watch on TV from time to time, the actual awards have absolutely no importance. It is one of only a few shows on which the audience decides who wins what, but the nominees are often ridiculous and the wins are mostly quite predictable.

The wins of Will Smith and Johnny Depp were obvious from the start, and the remaining results weren’t that surprising either.

As for the show itself, I only made it through the first half. Host Mike Meyers kicked off the evening with a dance battle against Chris Brown, which was fun to watch. I also enjoyed the “Wayne’s World” skit and the spoof featuring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black, but that was about it.

I was pretty shocked when Seth Rogen and James Franco pulled out the bag of “fake” weed and actually started lighting up the “fake” joint. I mean, I’m pretty open-minded about those things and really don’t care about what happened, but for American TV standards, I was surprised they let the cameras roll at that point.

MTV handled the matter by zooming out and moving on with the show, but as I just read in an AP article, Franco later claimed MTV told them deliver the stunt with the weed. Really?

Anyway, the fun’s over, and I guess I’ll see you next year for another round of insignificant movie awards.
