Our quick thoughts: Yahoo! Movies today premiered the first trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson’s upcoming action flick “Death Race,” which opens nationwide Aug. 22 and stars Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson and Joan Allen.

The story focuses on an ex-con (Statham) who’s forced to participate in a risky car race in which inmates must kill each other to snatch the victory. Joan Allen plays the tough warden who created the race.

Wild cars, hot chicks, and Statham doing what he always does… what else do you want? This first trailer includes some nice action moments, which is probably all there is to enjoy in the movie. Don’t count on a solid, captivating story. But if it’s fun to watch and not too monotonous, why not give it a shot?
