What you should rent this week, and what you shouldn't

georgiarulerent2.jpg

So, this week, I received some emails over at my blog, asking me to check out a few films. And so, I did. Keep 'em coming I say! After all, I'm here for you. I will take the bullet for you, absolute stranger that I've never met. I will be your sacrificial lamb, oh random person that I will probably never meet. I am bringing goodness into your life, one DVD review at a time. That's what I have been chosen to do. Therefore, I am the chosen one.

Anyway, this week you guys chose two movies that threw me for a loop. The one I thought I'd hate, I really liked. And the one I thought I'd like... well, let's just say, thanks for throwing me under the damn bus!

homeofthebraverent.jpgSkip it: "Home of the Brave"

This is what it is: Three American soldiers try to adjust to life after Iraq. Will (Samuel L. Jackson) is a doctor who returns to his unraveling life, Vanessa (Jessica Biel) learns to live with only one hand, and Tommy (Brian Presley) deals with the loss of his best friend in combat. Directed by Irwin Winkler, and Oscar-winning producer.

My always strong and quite often, brilliant opinion: What a piece of crapola! Cripes. This was just TERRIBLE. And I was excited to see this film, too. The story sounded so interesting to me. What a damn let down.

Let me break it down. This shall be brief.

The script - the dialogue is horrendous and definitely too preachy. The story just doesn't move forward, and characters and their relationships are not developed at all. The script is just bad.

The direction - is some of the worst I've seen in a while. I felt like watching a first-year project from a film student. No creativity in any of the shots. Amateurish camera angles. And I never felt like I was where I was supposed to be. I felt like I was just watching some actors pretending on a set. The direction was really BAA-HHAD.

The actors - completely unbelieveable. Every single one of them. Um, not in a good way. I'm talking completely not to be believed, because they are terrible. Relationships are forced. Scenes are overplayed. There is NOTHING real going on for any of them. Did I mention 50 Cent is in this? Uh, yeah. Please don't let him be in any more movies. Oh, and Christina Ricci is in it as well. And even she is bad. Samuel Jackson yells a lot. Like he always does. Augh. Let's just say, I did not care about any of them at all. Which is bizarre, right? I mean they are in a war, their friends are killed, and they come home to some pretty horrible circumstances. I should have cared, right? Nope. Not an ounce. The actors were BAA-HHAD.

I'm thinking most of this budget ($12 million) went to the actors. After all, there are some names in it. They should have saved that money and put it towards script development, a great director, and some quality talent.

Clearly my home was "of the brave" this week, since I was the brave one having to sit through this crap.

The final word: Because I snacked on my favorite Raisinets candies while viewing this, I will give it 1/2 of a Raisinet out of 5. Yup, not even a whole damn Raisinet. Are you understanding just how much I hated this film now?

georgiarulerent.jpgGet it: "Georgia Rule"

This is what it is: Lilly (Felicity Huffman) takes her out-of-control daughter, Rachel (Lindsay Lohan), to Idaho to live with her no-nonsense grandmother Georgia (Jane Fonda), who lays down her "Georgia rules." The two butt heads in the beginning, but eventually develop a strong connection. The film also stars Dermot Mulroney, and Garry Marshall directs.

My always strong and quite often, brilliant opinion: Okay, so I thought I was gonna hate this one. Lindsay Lohan? Uh yeah. I just knew it was gonna be bad. But I had to see it, because one of YOU requested I do so. So here I am, saying thank you. I loved this film. And I think you will, too.

This movie is fun, it's touching, it's a little bit shocking, it's happy, and it's sad. It explores forgiveness, structure among chaos, and it's a strong story about the strength of family. It also has a certain warmth to it that sucks you right in and makes you feel like you are part of the family.

It's a shame Lindsay Lohan is a such a trainwreck. It really is. Because she sure isn't talentless. She does a good job in this. And Jane Fonda is absolutely wonderful. She just gives you layer upon layer. I love that. And Felicity Huffman? Need I say more? The woman is just fabulous. It's beautiful watching every relationship in the film heal and grow. Warm is the word I would use to describe the feeling this film evokes. It just made me feel warm. And I liked that.

Great story, great direction, great pacing, great performances. Heather rule: rent this, and enjoy it.

The final word: Because I snacked on my favorite Raisinets candies while viewing this, I will give it 4 1/2 Raisinets out of 5. Yummy!! I like to dump my Raisinets into some popcorn. You should try it. I bet you'll like it. Oh, just trust me for crying out loud.

Once again, I found Heather's review right on the money. Saw "Home of the Brave" on the big screen, and found it truly disappointing. Waste of money! After your review of "Georgia Rules", I rented it and really enjoyed it. Thanks again!

Heather is the greatest! I watched "Home of the Brave," thinking it was going to be good like Stop Loss. Thing is, the subject matter is so timely and relevant, so important, but I didn't care one bit. The "acting" styles were all over the place, and I never felt like I was watching one whole story, just a bunch of actors doing their own thing with no clear picture drawn to them by the director. Just my humble opnion. But Heather's right...I should have cared. I didn't. And Georgia Rule was good...one I had not really paid attantion to before, but it happened to be on HBO or something (so I didn't even have to rent it!), and I watched some of it, and I did care about those people. Anyway...Heather once again entertains AND tells the truth. Love it, and love this column. Keep them coming.
