Trailer Review: "Beverly Hills Chihuahua"

Our quick thoughts: Here’s the film I’m definitely the least excited about this summer: “Beverly Hills Chihuahua.” I know this horrible teaser trailer doesn’t reveal anything about the film’s plot, but it stinks nonetheless. Talking animals in family films used to be a whole lot of fun, but I think it’s time to retire them. Unfortunately, the folks over at Disney have different plans. Directed by Raja Gosnell (“Scooby-Doo”), the film follows a high-class Beverly Hills chihuahua on its quest to return home after getting lost in Mexico. Piper Perabo and Jamie Lee Curtis star as real-life characters, while Drew Barrymore, Salma Hayek and George Lopez lend their voices to some of the dogs.
The trailer shows absolutely nothing remotely interesting, except a bunch (far too many, actually) of computer-generated chihuahuas dancing and singing this horrible “Chihuahua” song. The special effects are bad and the dance acts monotonous, which leads me to believe that the film itself won’t exactly be a blast. At least the dogs talk, because the barking of chihuahuas is probably the most annoying thing I’ve ever heard.
The dogs will invade theaters Sept. 26, 2008. Enjoy (or don’t) the teaser trailer below.
