Our quick thoughts: Just when you thought you’d get a break from watching Ice Cube flicks, he returns to the big screen. In the “Longshots,” Cube does what he always does: start off hating kids and end up hanging with them. But this time at least, he’s not trying to take a road trip or fix a house.
“The Longshots” is a sports drama based on the true story of Jasmine Plummer, an 11-year-old who became the first-ever female player in the Pop Warner football tournament. Judging by its first trailer, this film looks like it’s going to be just about generic as every other recent family sports flick, but what I do like about it is that it’s not another traditional Ice Cube comedy.
The other interesting fact here is that the movie is directed by Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, who plunged into filmmaking last year with “The Education of Charlie Banks.” I’m definitely looking forward to what he’s capable to produce on the big screen. Also, the film stars Keke Palmer, who delivered a wonderful performance in “Akeelah and the Bee.” Other than that, the trailer promises saccharine dialogue, pompous music, and a pretty predictable plot. Let’s wait and see.
