Daily shorts: Woo directs '1949'; Barton boards 'Malice'

johnwoonews.jpgJohn Woo is set to direct war romance “1949” after he completes post-production on his action adventure “Red Cliff.” Variety reports the film is a Chinese epic focusing on the end of WWII and the Chinese Civil War. Woo most recently directed “Paycheck.”

• According to Screen Daily, actress Mischa Barton has signed on to play the lead in “Malice in Wonderland,” a Simon Fellow-directed modern take on the children’s classic. Yet another spin on a classic tale? They tried this out before with “Sidney White,” but the result wasn’t at all that enchanting.

BBC News confirmed Tuesday that Christian Bale is set to star as John Connor in three sequels to the “Terminator” series. Production on the first film, “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins,” has already kicked off, with McG directing. Bale will next be seen in “The Dark Knight.”

• The original version still hasn’t found its way to the U.S., but Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the remake of French box office phenomenon “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis.” Variety reports Will Smith will produce the film, which is titled “Welcome to the Sticks.” Remaking a French success comedy? I believe history alone shows it simply won’t work.

• We also learned from Variety that Lasse Hallstrom will direct the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel “Dear John.” In the lead role, Channing Tatum plays a soldier who falls for a conservative college student. Another love story a la “The Notebook”? Bring it on.
