Real pirate to receive big-screen treatment

blackbeardnewsitem.jpgCaptain Jack Sparrow may never return to the big screen, but DreamWorks is set to produce a biopic about legendary pirate Blackbeard, according to Variety.

The film will chronicle the life of Edward Teach, an English pirate known as Blackbeard, who commanded the Queen Anne’s Revenge in the Caribbean Sea and western Atlantic during the 18th century.

David Franzoni, Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Amistad” and “Gladiator,” will compile the script. Barry Josephson is producing the project with Pat Croce, who owns his own pirate museum in Florida.

No director is attached to the film at this stage. Franzoni’s credits also include the screenplay for Antoine Fuqua’s “King Arthur.” He’s also apparently working on a script for Vin Diesel’s directorial debut “Hannibal the Conqueror.”
