Friday news take - April 4, 2008

Welcome to our Friday news take. The weekend is kicking in and that means no real breaking film news, but we’ve managed to gather a variety of cast updates, trailer premieres and new posters. In a nutshell, Nicole Kidman stars in another musical; David Ayer may soon start working on another crime thriller; “Tropic Thunder” gets new posters; and Fernando Meirelles’ latest film now finally boasts a trailer. Kidman and Dench to star in Broadway musical
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench are in final negotiations to star in Rob Marshall’s adaptation of the Broadway musical “Nine.”
Javier Bardem, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz and Sophia Loren have already signed on to the project, which tells the story of a film director who struggles to content his wife, mistress, muse, agent and mother.
The Tony-winning musical is based on Federico Fellini’s film “8 ½.” Principal photography for “Nine” is scheduled to begin early this fall. Marshall also directed the Oscar-winning musical “Chicago.”
"Street Kings" sequel in the works?
David Ayer’s crime thriller “Street Kings” is not even in release yet, but according to JoBlo.com, the director is already thinking about a prequel to the film. In a recent interview, Ayer said Fox Searchlight approached him with the idea.
“Street Kings” stars Keanu Reeves in the role of a veteran LAPD officer who bends his work rules after he’s implicated in the murder of his former partner. The film is scheduled to hit theaters April 11, 2008. Ayer also wrote the screenplay for Antoine Fuqua’s critically acclaimed thriller “Training Day.
New "Tropical Thunder" posters debut on web
IESB today posted three new posters and a banner for Ben Stiller’s upcoming action comedy “Tropic Thunder.” Starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. and Steve Coogan, the film involves a group of actors who are hunted down by ruthless guerrillas during the shooting of their latest blockbuster.

Trailer for Meirelles' "Blindness" premieres
Miramax Films today released the first trailer for Fernando Meirelles’ upcoming thriller “Blindness,” in which an epidemic of blindness suddenly descends upon a city. Based on the novel by Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago, the film stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Gael Garcia Bernal.
Meirelles also directed the critically acclaimed “City of God” and “The Constant Gardener.” “Blindness” is currently in post-production and will open in theaters nationwide on Oct. 3, 2008. Click HERE to watch the trailer, or check it out below.
