'X-Files' sequel gets a title

After weeks of negotiating about the official title for the much anticipated “X-Files” sequel, director Chris Carter and 20th Century Fox have agreed to name the film “The X-Files: I Want to Believe.”

Yahoo! broke the news earlier today, reporting this is the title Carter always had in mind. The title itself refers to a slogan printed on the famous UFO poster Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) kept in his office during the series.

The new title is definitely not as catchy as the one of its predecessor “The X-Files: Fight the Future,” but it ties in well with the show. Carter said he was satisfied with this title but had trouble convincing Fox executives over its marketability.

“I Want to Believe” is not an immediate continuation of the series that went off air in 2002, but Carter said the film is connected to several events Mulder and his partner Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) encountered over the nine seasons.

Details about the plot have been kept under wraps, and only a few members of the crew were allowed to read the script, Carter said in an interview with The Associated Press.

The final truth about “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” will be revealed when the film hits theaters July 25, 2008.
