“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” ad campaign hits big cities

If you live in a major North American city, chances are you’ve already spotted the new ad campaign Universal launched for its upcoming comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” which is scheduled to open April 18, 2008.

Fresh out of the Judd Apatow camp, the film stars Jason Segel (“Knocked Up”) in the role of a heartbroken man who heads to Hawaii in order to forget his recent break-up with TV star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). As fate would have it however, Sarah picked the same destination to spend a lovely vacation with her new lover.

Universal came up with an inventive poster campaign this time around. Instead of including close-ups of the actors and the film’s full title, the numerous placards on street corners, buses and cabs exclusively display a selection of funny tag lines. Most of them read “I’m so over you Sarah Marshall,” while others display “You suck Sarah Marshall,” “My mom always hated you Sarah Marshall,” and “You do look fat in those jeans Sarah Marshall.”

People who haven’t seen the trailer or simply haven’t heard anything about the film yet are certainly curious about the sudden appearance of the boards. A cab driver the other day asked me if I knew who Sarah Marshall was. After telling him a little bit about what the movie is about, he replied “I like her already.” I don’t know whether he’ll ever see the film in theatres, but at least Universal got him wondering about it.
