The players: Director: Andy Tennant, Writers: Daniel Zelman, Andy Tennant, John Claflin, Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland, Ewen Bremner, Alexis Dziena
Facts of interest: Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey also teamed up for "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days."
The plot: A divorcing couple teams up to track down a huge treasure.
Our quick thoughts: The list of this year’s worst films is growing fast. Andy Tennant’s ridiculously foolish comedy “Fool’s Gold” takes ultimate boredom to a whole new level, featuring not a single scene apparently didn’t learn their lessons after teaming up in Donal Petrie’s blatant comedy “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” In “Fool’s Gold,” they return as a divorcing couple struggling to find the Queen’s Dowry, a massive treasure lost at sea for hundreds of years.
I dozed off twice during this film, but every time I opened my eyes again I was shocked to notice that the plot hadn’t really advanced and the characters were still failing to come up with decent jokes. As expected, the script is undoubtedly the main source for the film’s abhorrent flaws. A shockingly monotonous and generic story line and incredibly idiotic dialogue cripple the plot early one and literally destroy every hope for improvement.
I really appreciated Tennant’s previous hit comedy “Hitch” for its amusing story, subtle enough humor and charming actors with wonderful chemistry, but as far as “Fool’s Gold” is concerned, it doesn’t even make sense to dig deeper into the plot. Every word spent on describing this film is clearly a waste of time.
McConaughey and Hudson still lack chemistry, and they probably offer the weakest performances of their careers. Instead of trying to work together well, they act retarded and clearly miss every opportunity to score a laugh or two. But it’s Donald Sutherland who delivers the most annoying performance of all. I respect Sutherland’s previous contributions to filmmaking, but watching him act this moronic makes me second-guessing his talent.
Freaky quote: "We just had sex in a church! I can't believe we haven't been struck by lightening yet! " - Kate Hudson
The final word: "Fool’s Gold” is one of those pathetic romantic comedies that should never been greenlit in the first place. Unfortunately, there’s not much we can do about it. As long as business is booming at the box office (“Fool’s Gold” opened at No. 1 this weekend with $22 million), we’ll have to sit through more of these trashy Hollywood projects that suck the money out of your wallet and offer you nothing in return. Don’t be a fool, stay at home or pick another flick.
