"Strange Wilderness"

strangewilderness.jpg rating1.gif

Seen on: February 2, 2008

The players: Director: Fred Wolf, Writers: Fred Wolf and Peter Gaulke, Cast: Steve Zahn, Allen Covert, Ashley Scott, Justin Long, Kevin Heffernan

Facts of interest: None whatsoever.

The plot: Two wildlife friends embark on a dangerous journey to hunt down Bigfoot.

Our quick thoughts: There's nothing strange or wild about "Strange Wilderness," an embarrassing comedy that will only suck the money out of your wallet and offer you absolutely nothing in return. And it starts with a fairly ridiculous story: in an attempt to keep their crappy TV show on the air, two idiotic animal freaks embark on a perilous journey to hunt down Bigfoot. Sadly enough, there’s nothing adventurous about this ultra-boring trip. Nudity, drug and alcohol abuse, and countless outbursts of profanity dominate the monotonous plot, which also offers the most primitive dialogues I have ever heard. At best, the film feels just like watching a bunch of caged chimpanzees going cuckoo.

Utterly repulsive humor, brain-dead characters and a banal story line are just a few of the horde of flaws you will eventually discover in “Strange Wilderness.” Scatological jokes and disgusting slapstick are abundant, but big laughs are nowhere to be found in this jungle. Director Fred Wolf, who also happens to be the screenwriter of “Without a Paddle,” has no feeling for comedy and constantly fails to hold his actors together.

As far as the cast is concerned, Steve Zahn delivers the most pathetic performance of the decade. Jonah Hill (“Superbad”) and Justin Long (“Accepted”) are major disappointments as well, offering the kind of performances that could easily ruin a career in no time. I won’t even bother mentioning their colleagues, because writing about this flick in great length is a pure waste of time in itself.

Freaky quote: "Bears drive their name from a football team in Chicago" - Steve Zahn

The final word: I am certainly repeating myself, but “Strange Wilderness” is a waste of time and money. It’s the first film of 2008 to be smashed with our lowest rating, and it’s also the first film to receive a secured spot in the list of this year’s worst films. Do not dare enter this wilderness, because chances are you’ll never make it out alive!
