The players: Director: Jeff Lowell, Writer: Jeff Lowell, Cast: Paul Rudd, Eva Longoria Parker, Lake Bell, Jason Biggs, Lindsay Sloane
Facts of interest: Lowell also wrote the screenplay for "John Tucker Must Die."
The plot: After being killed by an angel, an angry ghost (Longoria Parker) swears to sabotage her ex-boyfriend's new relationship with a psychic.
Our quick thoughts: “Over Her Dead Body” is the epitome of unbearable comedy. It’s also an embarrassing waste of time. Directed by Jeff Lowell, the film stars Eva Longoria Parker as a ghost whose only desire is to destroy her ex-boyfriend’s (Paul Rudd) relationship with his new girlfriend (Lake Bell). In a nutshell, I guess it’s pretty safe to say that absolutely nothing happens in this grotesque mess of a movie. The jokes don’t fly, the plot is monotonous at best, and sane cinemagoers will likely find it hard not to fall asleep every 10 minutes. Well, let’s make that five.
Poor screenwriting is the source of the film’s major flaws. The story line couldn’t be more predictable, the lame humor never provokes laughter, and Eva Longoria’s numerous attempts to ruthlessly sabotage her former boyfriend’s new romance are banal at best. “Over Her Dead Body” comes without any surprises or funny gags, offering audiences nothing for the price of admission.
As if things couldn’t get any worse, the cast screws up big time. Longoria Parker is great on “Desperate Housewives,” but it would be better for everybody if she stayed off the big screen in the near future. Co-stars Paul Rudd and Lake Bell share absolutely no chemistry, and Jason Biggs’ role as idiot assistant to one of the main characters is annoying and totally unnecessary.
Freaky quote: "Oh I'll do it!" - Lake Bell
The final word: “Over Her Dead Body” is yet another Hollywood stinker even fans of Eva Longoria Parker are likely to despise. If these blatant comedies keep hitting theatres like they are now, I’ll soon be ready to eat a broom and think about retiring early.
